An aircraft rudder is a directional control surface that is usually attached to the vertical stabilizer and which allows the pilot to control yaw about the vertical axis, i.e. change the horizontal direction in which the nose is pointing.
The vertical stabilizer is primary structure in most cases mounted vertically to the aircrafts rear fuselage and its main function is to reduce aerodynamic side slip and provide direction stability. The rudder is attached to the aircraft structure along with the horizontal tail plane, together forming the aircraft's empennage.
